Seat Reservations for European and UK Rail Pass Holders

Do I need a Seat Reservation?

This depends on your Rail Pass.

  • 1. In the United Kingdom, Rail passes such as BritRail and ScotRail passes do not require reservations unlike Eurail Passes that do. Click Here for more details.
  • 2. For European Rail Passes including Eurail, Interrail, German Rail, Swiss Rail, Balkan Rail, European East Passes and more, click here for more country specific information.

What is a train reservation?

Train reservations, also known as seat reservations, are at times required or recommended for holders of a rail pass or “open” train ticket.

When a seat reservation is required, the cost is not included in the pass and varies depending on the country, type of train and date of purchase. A train reservation can be made per person, per train for a fee and is only valid for use on the specific train, date and time for which it was purchased.

5 reasons to purchase seat reservations:

  • 1. Have peace of mind and all your documents in hand before you travel.
  • 2. If you are traveling in a group, it guarantees that you will sit together.
  • 3. Some trains require that passengers have reservations.
  • 4. Some trains have assigned a limited number of seats for passholders.  Due to this limited supply, it is a good idea for you to get them in advance.
  • 5. Don’t miss your connections with a guaranteed seat on your desired train.
